A new 308-lot housing estate at the Southside is one step closer to reality after the first stage was given the green light by Gympie Regional Council this week.
Developer DPR Southside’s application to subdivide one part of the development - a 12ha block - into 15 new houses and four commercial buildings was approved by the council’s Planning Department under delegation.
The commercial precinct would include a medical centre and pharmacy, veterinarian, offices, a gym, a childcare centre and shops including a cafe or restaurant.
Almost 100 development conditions were imposed on the project as part of the approval, which includes a $674,455 infrastructure charge on the developers.
The developers still need to obtain development permits to begin construction of stage one.
The entire estate is proposed to be opened up across 42ha at the Southside between Groundwater and Lawson Rds.

Twelve submissions about the proposed estate were made by residents, with many raising concerns about later parts of the development which proposed filling in natural tributaries at Eel Creek.
These stages of the estate have not yet been given approval by the council.
If completed the developers say Bellagrove Estate will open up 370 new homes in the region, and 85 jobs within its business precinct.
