Chris Laycock killed in Bruce Hwy crash at Bauple

A former James Nash State High student who grew up in the close country community of Theebine has been identified as the man killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Bruce Hwy south of Maryborough on Thursday.

Gympie man Chris Laycock has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash on the Bruce Hwy at Bauple on Thursday, which is believed to have been caused by a wheel coming loose from a caravan.

Mr Laycock, 59, was travelling north in a ute behind the caravan when the wheel came loose about 12.20pm, near the highway intersections with Stratford and Mountain Rds.

Initial investigations indicate the tyre came loose and struck a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The truck then collided with Mr Laycock’s ute.

He died at the scene.

Police said the truck driver, a 58-year-old Sunshine Coast man, sustained “non-life-threatening injuries”.

He was taken to Gympie Hospital.

The third driver, a 44-year-old Cairns woman, was not physically injured and police said in a media release on Thursday she was assisting officers with the ongoing investigations.

The highway was cut for several hours in both directions following the crash, with traffic turned around or diverted through Bauple.

Drivers with dashcam of the crash are being urged to contact police.
