'Gift to the community': Local's bid to preserve art work

Godzilla, graffiti and garages all come together in an exciting display of talent in a Nash Street car park in the Gympie CBD.

The colourful “Zoinkilla” mural seemingly appeared overnight, and was created by a Gold Coast artist.

He was originally commissioned by the owners of Play Back Gympie to create a mural inspired by Back to the Future on the business building facade.

It was during this project that inspiration in the form of a Godzilla pinball machine struck the artist, who has asked not to be named.

Play Back owner Aisha Belling said the artist was itching to recreate the arcade table’s artwork himself.

“Initially, he asked us about painting the side wall,” Aisha said.

“Then he parked his car one time and said, ‘Hey, there’s a street legal art wall up there – can anyone paint on that?’”

“By the next day he’d painted it white and was working on it.”

Aisha hopes the mural will help inspire budding artists in the region.

“It’s inspirational for kids to see what can be done with skills that are just from a paint can,” she said.

“Our local kids will be able to do this, and be able look at it and think, ‘That’s incredible, I’d like to be able to do that too’.”

Gympie Regional councillor Bruce Devereaux has been a major supporter of the artwork and wants his council to preserve the wall with a clear seal.

“I was at a luncheon on Monday and the people there … were saying how good it was,” Mr Devereaux said.

“It’s something that’s speaking to people a lot more than the ones who normally like street art.

“That reinforced for me that it’s well worth keeping and preserving for Gympie.”

He plans to put in a notified motion with the council to save the artwork.

Mr Devereaux said the best way for locals to rally behind the painted lizard was to contact the council by email at council@gympie.qld.gov.au
