Normanby Bridge to stay open while damaged overpass rebuilt

UPDATE: Traffic coming off the Bruce HIghway and Mary Valley Highway will still be able to use the Normanby Bridge

Normanby Bridge will be closed for about three months while a $3 million reconstruction of the damaged overpass is carried out.

UPDATE: Normanby Bridge will not be closed to traffic for the three months it takes to rebuild the Normanby overpass, as originally reported, but it will be closed to traffic coming off or going on to Hughes Terrace.

A brochure outlining the $2.9 million project and delivered to impacted residents states Bruce Highway traffic will travel around the work site via the on off ramps either side of the highway. Motorists wishing to travel from Hughes Terrace on to Gympie Brooloo Road and vice versa will need to take an alternate route either via Kidd Bridge and Power Road, or alternatively travelling south on the Bruce Highway and crossing Mary Valley Link Road.

However, motorists coming off the Mary Valley Highway (Gympie Brooloo Road) will be able to cross Normanby Bridge to travel north on the Bruce Highway, and motorists travelling on the Bruce Highway will be able to cross the Normanby Bridge to get on Gympie Brooloo Road.

A notice issued to impacted Gympie region residents does not give a specific date for the work to begin, but says it will be in early February, and will not be completed until May.

A 17-tonne limit and 40km/h speed limit was imposed on the overpass linking Hughes Terrace to the Normanby Bridge after it was serious damaged when hit by a truck in 2018.

A subsequent structural analysis determined that the bridge's deck and girders had to be reconstructed.

DTMR business Roadtek will carry out the project, which will generally be completed Monday to Saturday between 6am and 6pm.
