A motorcyclist who died after a horrific crash with a campervan was on the way to a mate’s house but never made it, his family has revealed.
Leigh Cousens, 41, died on Thursday when his Suzuki GSX-S100 motorbike collided with a campervan at the intersection of Elizabeth Ave and George Street at Kippa Ring.
His mother Jenny Cousens told the Courier Mail her son was on the way to his friends house when he was involved in the accident.
“One thing we’ve taught him was to always be on time, and he was late,” she said.
“His friend backtracked to look at where Leigh would have gone and came across the site of the accident.
“I think Leigh was probably gone already by then, but he saw the motorbike, and he saw the number plate of the motorbike, and he knew it was Leigh’s bike.”
Ms Cousens said she was at Hervey Bay with her sister when police tried knocking on the door but was informed of the shocking incident by the friend who told her other son.
Police informed her over the phone that her son had passed away.
The news of her son’s death has left the whole family devastated.
Ms Cousens said two days after her son’s death was her 49th anniversary with her husband making her sad about the life he could have lived.
“He was going to be moving in soon with his long time girlfriend,” she said.
“She is just a perfect match. She’s very similar to him, and they were just getting things settled and going to move in together.
“It would have been lovely.
“She’s such a lovely woman too. She’s as devastated as we are.”
Ms Cousens said her son was very careful and thoughtful. One distinct memory she remembers was when her mother passed away.
“Mum was pretty bad at the end, and she didn’t really want to see anybody,” she said.
“I remember telling my boys, the end was very close, and that she didn’t want to see anyone and Leigh just cried on the phone. When he did that, I knew he had to see her.
“There’s a beautiful photo from that day of her looking up at Leigh with the most wonderful.”
Ms Cousens said she was touched by all the tributes people had sent her about her son. Social media was also flooded with tributes with many saying how “thoughtful” and “caring” he was and how he would be “forever missed”.
“He was our son. We knew how loving he was, but we’re finding out how deeply he was with other people as well,” she said.
The driver of the campervan was not injured in the crash.
The Forensic crash unit is investigating and are asking anyone who may have seen anything or have dashcam vision to come forward.
