Two men aged 69 and 82 have been killed in a light plane crash in the Scenic Rim, metres from where people were playing golf.
Emergency services were called to Bruckner Hill Rd in Dugandan, near the entrance to the Boonah Golf Club, shortly before noon after the plane crashed into the ground.
Paramedics rushed to the scene but the pilot and passenger could not be saved.
Ipswich Acting Inspector Kerry Olsen confirmed nobody survived the crash.
“There was a plane crash reported in the Dugandan area and tragically two people have lost their lives as a result of that crash,” she said.
“Emergency services are still on scene trying to undertake some investigations and to actually ascertain what caused this particular tragedy.
“We have police who are engaging with the families … of the two persons who were on that plane and we wish their families every possible amount of support that can be provided to them at this time.”
She said police were not aware of any mayday call from the aircraft but that it would form part of the investigation.
Insp Olsen said the plane had taken off from the Boonah airfield and was returning when it crashed.
“That is something the investigators will have to pursue, in terms of any transmissions that were made from the aircraft,” she said.
“We are aware that there are many members of the community who may have witnessed this particular crash and our thoughts are also with those persons.
“As you can imagine, any crash scene can be quite confronting and the first responders managed to respond to that very quickly but members of the community may also have been impacted.
“We would like to request if possible that if anyone has any form of footage, whether it be dashcam, home security or any other footage that they may possess of planes flying in the Boonah area, if they are able to provide that to Policelink to help assist in our investigations, that would be greatly appreciated.
“And if there are any witnesses to the actual crash, if they also could contact Policelink that would be greatly appreciated.”
Insp Olsen said she believed “many” people were on the golf course when the plane crashed near the car park area.
“This is a tragedy - we’re currently in school holidays, it’s a beautiful afternoon in the Scenic Rim and we are certainly sending out our thoughts and every possible support that we can provide (to the community).
“If people do need further support, please reach out and ask for it.”
She said golfers were asked by police to leave the course.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau had been advised of the crash and would be assisting the investigation but would not attend the scene, Insp Olsen said.
A man at the Boonah Golf Club said they heard the plane crash.
He said he believed around 10-15 people were playing at the time.
“Nobody really saw the crash but we heard it,” he said.
“We thought it was the air force ... who do regular drills in the area.”
