A young man who assaulted a woman more than twice his age at a Christmas function was protecting his mother at the time, a court has heard.

Tyler Jaydon Beyer, 21, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on February 27 to common assault.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said about 8.30pm on December 9, police were called to Gladstone’s Young Australian Hotel in relation to a disturbance between two families at a Christmas function.

Sgt Ongheen said Beyer involved himself in the disturbance by grabbing a 47-year-old woman, who he didn’t know, by the hair and pulling her to the ground.

The court heard that Beyer had no criminal history.

Solicitor Caitlin Dee said Beyer was currently unemployed, receiving Youth Allowance and looking for work.

In relation to the incident, Ms Dee said it was a drunken altercation between two families.

She said the woman Beyer assaulted had been “heading towards” his mother in a “quite aggressive manner.”

“And he just grabbed (her) pony tail to stop this woman potentially attacking his mum,” Ms Dee said.

“He understands that this is not civilised behaviour.”

Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Beyer $500 and ordered he pay $500 compensation to the victim.

No conviction was recorded.

The victim and Mr Beyer’s mother were not accused of wrongdoing.
