A Central Queensland teenager has been sentenced for the assault of a senior citizen which left him with “serious injuries”.
The girl, now 18, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Children's Court to charges including serious assault of a person over 60, and demanding property with menace with intent to steal.
A six-page sentencing schedule was tendered to the court which did not hear specific details about the girl’s offending - only that the serious assault victim was a 66-year-old man who suffered “serious injuries” and the victim of the second offence was a 14-year-old child.
The offences did not occur in Gladstone but the girl had since relocated there, the court heard.
The girl’s juvenile criminal history included assault occasioning bodily harm, obstruct police and wilful damage offending.
Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said the girl had previously spent 68 days in pre-sentence custody for this offending which was “not insignificant for a young person.”
Mr Boyd submitted a probation order could be imposed for this offending.
A Youth Justice court coordinator told Magistrate Buchanan the girl had a “high level” of attendance with Youth Justice since relocating to Gladstone and she had engaged in programs.
Solicitor Bianca Wieland said a report tendered to the court detailed “significant traumatic circumstances” the girl suffered both at the time of the offending and prior to it.
Ms Wieland also said the 68 days’ pre-sentence custody was “not insignificant” and “a long period of time for a young person to spend in a correctional facility.”
Ms Wieland said since the girl was granted bail, there had been no breaches nor issues.
She submitted probation could be ordered.
Magistrate Buchanan placed the girl on nine months’ probation and also imposed a reprimand.
No convictions were recorded.
