An electrical engineer has paid for a drunken crime he committed in the carpark at a Gladstone McDonald’s store.

Joseph Alexander Carige, 24, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on May 8 to wilful damage.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said about 10.15pm on April 10, Carige walked out of a Gladstone Central McDonald’s store into the carpark.

“He paused for a moment before violently snapping the rear windscreen wiper of a parked Ford Fiesta,” Sgt Hoskins said.

The court heard the female victim in this matter reported the incident to police and provided CCTV images as well as still images of Carige causing the damage.

“She (victim) said she did not know the male in the footage,” Sgt Hoskins said.

The court heard that police found Carige and when they spoke to him, he said he had gone to McDonald’s to get food after being at the pub.

Sgt Hoskins said Carige told police he did not know anything about the damaged windscreen wiper.

He was later charged.

The court heard Carige had no criminal history and the prosecution sought $250 restitution.

Solicitor Allan Grant did not provide a detailed verbal submission but did say Carige didn’t object to the restitution sought, and Acting Magistrate Mary Buchanan read a written submission.

Before handing down penalty, Ms Buchanan noted Carige was an electrical engineer who was affected by alcohol on the night of his offending.

Ms Buchanan said Carige had accepted what he did was “childish.”

She fined Carige $200 and ordered he pay $250 restitution.

No conviction was recorded.
