A young Central Queensland man who crashed the car he was driving while hooning has faced court to get his punishment.

Jack Harrison Wood, 20, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on September 19 to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The court heard that on August 27, about 9.50pm, Wood was driving on Toolooa Street, Gladstone, with a female passenger in the car.

The prosecution said Wood was doing 70kmh in a 60 zone when he engaged the hand brake, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

“(Wood) attempted to correct the vehicle but was unable to,” the prosecutor said.

He subsequently crashed into the fence of a Toolooa Street residence, causing damage.

At 11.59pm, Wood went to Gladstone Police Station and told them he had crashed the car while attempting to do skids, the court heard.

The prosecution said Wood’s conduct on the night was dangerous but he had no traffic history and no criminal history.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Wood was a carpenter, who with help from his dad, had fixed the damaged fence.

Accordingly the prosecution did not seek any restitution.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan said Wood had shown genuine remorse for what he had done by repairing the fence.

She placed Wood on a 12-month good behaviour order with a $750 recognisance, and disqualified him from driving for six months.

No traffic conviction was recorded.
