DV offender Gregory Lea punched woman in face five times

Punched five times in the face and left bleeding on the floor a Qld woman waited until her attacker was asleep and took her chance to flee.

A woman who was punched five times in the face during a domestic violence assault was able to escape her attacker when he fell asleep, a court has heard.

Gregory Douglas Lea, 44, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 15, to charges including common assault (domestic violence offence).

The court heard that on February 4, Lea and the female victim had been drinking wine together at a New Auckland residence.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said about 5.30pm, Lea got angry and punched the woman in the face five times.

The woman suffered nose bleeding as a result, the court was told.

“He (Lea) told her to get up and clean herself up,” Sgt Hoskins said.

“He then laid down on the bed and told her to lay on the floor.”

Sgt Hoskins said the woman waited until Lea fell asleep.

“And when she heard him snoring, she ran out of the house and called Triple-0.”

Lea had a three-page criminal history but had not been in court for some years.

Solicitor Stephen White said Lea was a father of three who was currently unemployed, having previously worked as a maintenance technician.

Mr White submitted for a term of imprisonment, either wholly suspended or with immediate parole.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan said punching the woman in the face five times was “incredibly serious” offending.

She sentenced Lea to nine months’ jail with immediate parole and convictions were recorded.
