Corin Hayden Munro thought he was just “shouting a mate some cones” but his perceived generosity led to a drug supply charge.
The 41-year-old pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to charges including possessing and supplying dangerous drugs, possessing drug items, failing to properly dispose of a syringe, and attempted stealing.
The court heard that last August, police executed a search warrant at Munro’s Boyne Island residence where, on his phone they found evidence of a cannabis supply to another person.
Police also found Munro in possession of 5g of cannabis, a bong and syringes used for drugs.
In relation to the supply, the court heard Munro told police he “was just shouting a mate some cones”.
The court heard the attempted stealing offence happened at Gladstone when Munro tried to steal a light and chain from Bunnings, but he was busted by an off-duty police officer.
Munro had an eight-page criminal history and at the time of committing these latest offences, he was on an extended suspended sentence.
Solicitor Cassandra Ditchfield said Munro was a single father of three and he had been self-medicating with cannabis for his depression and anxiety.
“He was actually in the process of obtaining a legitimate prescription for cannabis,” Ms Ditchfield said.
“In terms of the supply (charge), he didn’t appreciate, as many don’t surprisingly, that it amounts to a supply (even) if there is no money involved.
“When they’re sharing (drugs) amongst friends, a lot of people have the (wrong) opinion that it’s not a supply.”
Magistrate Mary Buchanan activated the suspended sentence, and sentenced Munro to nine months’ jail with immediate parole.
Convictions were recorded.
