A popular rural pub between Gladstone and Rockhampton could soon be no more, with plans lodged to turn it into a new highway service station.
A material change of use application was recently lodged with Gladstone Regional Council for a new service station to be built at the site of the Raglan Tavern on the Bruce Highway at Raglan.
The tavern was purchased by the developer SJS Fuels Pty Ltd in August last year for $39,600.
According to the plans, the tavern building itself would be converted into the service station shop with the current outdoor undercover area to be knocked down to make way for a new canopy and fuel bowsers.
Floor plans for the service station shop include a retail space for convenience goods, a small dining area, kitchen, office, amenities, cool room, store rooms and a freezer.
According to the development assessment report the service station would have six double sided bowsers, under the canopy, with two bowsers on the western side to include high flow diesel pumps for trucks to refuel.
The service station is proposed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
According to the plans the proposed development would continue to use the three existing vehicle accesses for entry and exit to the service station from the Bruce Highway.
The proposed service station would also include 11 carparking spaces, including one disabled parking space, as well as air and water facilities.
According to 2021 Census data the town of Raglan, which is located between Rockhampton and Gladstone, has a population of 143 people.
If the tavern was to be repurposed, the closest watering hole for locals would be located at Mount Larcom, 20km, or Marmor, 12km.
The proposed development at the tavern site is next door to a site where another proposed service station has been approved to be built.
That development application was first lodged with council by BGT Properties No. 1 Pty Ltd in October 2021 for the servo to be built next door to the tavern and was approved in March 2022.
The project’s approval was stalled in December of 2021 after concerns were raised over the right-hand turn access.
The application for the proposed service station at the tavern site is subject to council approval.
