Weatherzone has reported the break down of the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which has underpinned one of Australia's driest years on record.
When the dipole is in its positive phase, Australia's atmospheric moisture is restricted. The breakdown will allow for more precipitation.
While this doesn't mean weather will change abruptly, residents should still consider their storm season action plans should inclement weather come their way.
Toowoomba Regional Mayor Paul Antonio highlighted some preparations that could be made.
"Motorists are reminded to heed the simple message, 'If it's flooded, forget it'. Please observe any warning signs and drive to the conditions," Mr Antonio said.

"Residents should be vigilant for any fallen powerlines or other hazards in high winds. We all have a role to play in ensuring that we are prepared for whatever nature throws at us."
