More than 30 per cent of juveniles arrested in Logan over the last few months were serious repeat offenders, as police lay more than 500 charges against young criminals.
But Logan detectives say they’re seeing a decrease in youth crime, with the number of offenders dropping from 336 to 282 over three months.
Queensland Police Service (QPS) have released dramatic vision of some of the juvenile arrests over the past few months, including of a 15-year-old Logan boy who was tracked by the dog squad and another 15-year-old who allegedly tried to run from police and hide in bushland.
Logan District Detective Chief Inspector Mark White said it showed the commitment of police to seek justice for victims.
“Every day and night detectives are targeting those serious repeat offenders, and these numbers demonstrate that what we’re doing is starting to work,” Inspector White said.
According to QPS, between July 1 and September 30 Logan District recorded 604 offences involving young offenders – down from 810 offences between April 1 and June 30.
Detectives have arrested 132 young people on 514 charges – 30 per cent of those were serious repeat offenders who were charged with 218 offences.
Inspector White said with more than 1500 interactions by the Youth Co-responder, they had seen a 25 per cent decrease in offences committed by young people on bail.
Some of those arrested included a 15-year-old Logan Central boy taken into custody in July after allegedly running from police.
Footage shows the boy, with his hands up in bushland, as police yell “why are you running, mate?”.
He’s arrested and police bodycam captures an officer pulling gloves and a balaclava from the boy’s bag.
He was arrested and charged.
In another arrest, a 15-year-old Logan Central boy asks an officer “what do you mean?” when told he’s being arrested for unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
The footage, captured on August 19, shows police take the boy into custody after a series of car thefts and break-ins, and an incident where he allegedly posted a video from within a stolen car online.
He was charged with 18 offences.
On August 8, a 16-year-old Mount Warren boy was arrested in Beenleigh after police deployed a tyre deflation device on a stolen car he was in.
The boy allegedly ran from cops, but the dog squad were deployed and body cam footage captures the moment the teenager drops to the ground in front of the K9 officer.
“Get on the ground,” an officer yells.
He was charged with a range of offences.
Inspector White said police had a number of programs for young people to help turn their lives around.
“While offence numbers fluctuate and the impact of new initiatives will need time to take effect, we want the community to know police are out there doing all we can to keep them safe.”
