Gerard’s in Fortitude Valley named Australia’s most beautiful restaurant

A Brisbane restaurant has taken out the coveted title of Australia’s most beautiful space at the annual Eat Drink Design Awards

Gerard’s in the up-market dining precinct of James Street in Fortitude Valley, and designer J.AR Office, were revealed as the winners of Best Restaurant Design in the Eat Drink Design Awards Gallery on Friday Morning.

The venue, recently renovated after 11 years, features rammed earth walls, cinematic lighting, beeswaxed oak and mil-finish steel give the space a timeless, historic feel.

It has been praised for its ‘otherworldly’ presence.

The Eat Drink Design Awards jury said they recognised Gerard’s for its “exceptional originality and innovative approach”.

“This design embodies a holistic dining experience, where the environment is as compelling as the food and wine; reflecting a deep understanding of space and a commitment to providing something truly novel and memorable,” the jury said.

“Gerard’s is a testament to exceptional design execution.”

Like stepping off the street into the set of a science-fiction film, the space was influenced by the Phoenician Temple of Baalbek, and mirrors the rich and varied spices used in Lebanese cuisine and across Gerard’s menu.

Owner Johnny Moubarak described the space and the menu as being in “conversation with each other”.

“The menu at Gerard’s reflects deep, bold flavours that evoke memories and create sensory connections, and the design needed to mirror this essence,” Moubarak said.

“The use of warm textures and organic shapes to enhance this atmosphere, ensured every element feels harmonious with the dishes served.

“It’s more than just what’s on the plate; it’s about the ambience, the way the light falls on the table, the plate you dine from, the weight of the cutlery, and the sounds drifting from the kitchen.”

“Every material, sight, scent, and touch contributes to an immersive experience that goes beyond taste, creating an all-encompassing, unforgettable dining experience.”

Gerard’s marks the first completed hospitality venue design for J.AR Office, and designer Jared Webb said it was an honour to see the designs values resonate outside of Brisbane.

“We compared Gerard’s perseverance and icon status to the Temple of Baalbek in Lebanon. A stone structure, though worn, has persisted,” Webb said.

“The reimagined Gerard’s embodies this.

“The design and concept evolved from a mindful acknowledgment of tradition, cultural heritage, and craftsmanship.

“The concept ultimately sought to raise up a monument that is a testament to the next

era of the Moubarak’s culinary legacy.”

Gerard’s is open for dinner Monday through Saturday and lunch on Fridays and Saturdays.
