Strong support for Withcott shopping centre development

NEWS that a supermarket development in Withcott was approved with the condition that traffic lights are placed at the Jones Rd and Warrego Hwy intersection has been met with strong local support.
A Main Roads spokesperson said the developer of the site would be responsible for 70% of the costs associated with installing the traffic lights and half the cost of accommodating 'development related' U turns at impacted intersections such as Roches Rd.
Withcott Fruit and Veg Owner Monica Grorud said she welcomed the lights.
"For me, any amount of traffic calming would be an improvement on what we have there now," she said.
"Withcott is basically in two sections with different sides of the highway and when it comes to end of school time down here, there is always a bottle neck of people trying to get on and get across the highway.
"I think lights here will be fabulous and calm the traffic more than it is at the moment.
"I actually think there needs to be those orange flashing warning lights further up near the range as well.
"As it is now, people don't want to leave the highway, and once they are on they want to stay on. The lights will make it easier to get around the town.
"Even the shopping centre itself will bring more traffic to the area and invite people to leave the highway."
Another supporter of the development was Lockyer Valley mayor Steve Jones.
"Whenever you have a shopping centre, very often it is the magnet that brings in the customers to the other shops," he said.
"If the supermarket was there it would be good for the other businesses in the area.
"In regards to the works in Withcott, I hope Main Roads work with the developer well, because the situation in Withcott at the moment is dangerous."
