Drunken man alarms public with appalling driving

A drink driving repeat offender won’t be driving for a very long time after he was caught drink driving twice in two weeks.

A Grantham meat worker has lost his license for more than three years and will have to pay a $2500 fine after he was found drink driving twice in two weeks.

A $2500 fine and more than three years without a license may be what it takes to teach a Lockyer Valley man not to drink and drive.

When he got behind the wheel on February 29, Kemu Mell Anis, 23, was drunk – nearly five times the legal limit – and was unlicensed.

Only two weeks earlier, the Grantham meat worker’s license had been suspended by police when he was caught drink driving.

Gatton Magistrates Court heard Anis had been driving on William Street, Gatton, when he was pulled over at 1.30am on February 15.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Alister Windsor said a roadside drug test confirmed Anis’s blood alcohol concentration was above the middle alcohol limit at 0.125.

Though his license was suspended, he took to the roads again, this time catching police attention in Booval.

He was pulled over at 7.30pm on Fox Street after another motorist reported his poor driving to police.

“A member of the public had concerns relating to a vehicle driving in the North Ipswich area,” Sgt Windsor said.

“There were concerns the driver might be under the influence.”

When police caught up to Anis, they tested his blood alcohol level and found he was significantly over the limit.

“It returned a reading of .229 … And at that time he was subject to a suspension in relation to the first offence,” Sgt Windsor said.

Anis pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving under the influence and driving while disqualified.

Duty lawyer James Ryan told Magistrate Kay Ryan his client was remorseful for his actions.

Ms Ryan asked Anis if he had a problem with alcohol and suggested a term of probation, to which Anis would need to consent.

“It might be too difficult at this stage, your honour,” Mr Ryan said.

“Well, if he does it again and it’s still too difficult to do probation, you know exactly what he will get,” Ms Ryan said.

She blasted Anis for his driving.

“It’s extraordinary. First of all, we’ve got a .125, which is high enough … Then we have here a .229 – that’s 4.5 times above the limit. Terrible,” she said.

“It may have been the manner of your driving when people could see perhaps you were under the influence – which you were.”

Ms Ryan noted Anis would not agree to probation.

“Yes, I understand it would be difficult,” she said.

“If this were to happen again and you did not want to do probation, you would end up with terms of imprisonment.”

She served Anis a $2500 fine and disqualified him from driving for five months for drink driving and 15 months for driving under the influence.

For driving while suspended, Anis was disqualified from driving for two years.

“You will be without your license for more than three years.”

A conviction was recorded.
