An apprentice plumber has fallen over while attempting to run from police during a midnight incident

The heavily intoxicated man fled from police but the foot chase was short-lived due to his inability to stay upright for too long during his clumsy getaway attempt.

A decision to try to outrun cops while drunk was a spectacular failure for one man, whose inability to walk straight or stay upright led to officers nabbing him in no time.

Daniel Grant Evans was driving through Gatton at 1am with his mates when police patrols spotted a sedan veering across the lanes on Woodlands Road.

Officers activated their lights and when the vehicle came to a stop on Hennessey Street, Evans and his passengers fled the vehicle, running into a neighbouring golf course.

Gatton Magistrates Court was told the 21-year-old was easily spotted due to his white hoodie and sneakers, and fell over several times while police gave chase.

He continued to lose balance as officers escorted him back to the vehicle, where it was revealed he was not the owner and should have had P-plates displayed, the court heard

Police prosecutor Narelle Lowe said Evans was given four opportunities to provide a breath test at the station but refused to co-operate.

“He repeatedly stopped blowing into the instrument before the test was completed, and also imitated blowing into the mouthpiece,” Sergeant Lowe said.

“He was warned on several occasions.”

Evans denied being the driver of the car, despite the front seat passenger confirming he was the one behind the wheel.

Solicitor DT Cole said his client was an apprentice plumber who worked closely with his father and was contracted to the prison construction site.

“It was the Saturday straight after he had gone out with the boys, no excuses, drinking,” Mr Cole said.

“He had been working extremely long hours and just had a brain snap.”

Mr Cole said Evans’s father was “ropeable”, and added 21-year-old couldn’t remember “a hell of a lot, which wasn’t surprising”.

Evans pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of liquor, obstructing police, failing to display P-plates and failing to provide a specimen of breath.

He was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

No conviction was recorded.
