A drugged-up bikie told police he thought he left enough time between his last cone and jumping on his motorbike.

But 44-year-old Gatton man Dennis Robert Shields was wrong, and instead ended up crashing his green Honda motorcycle on Brightview road.

Shields was the sole rider on his bike, which according to police reports, was travelling west before losing control for “unknown reasons”.

In the Gatton Magistrates Court on June 21, it was heard Shields was treated by paramedics before being flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Police prosecutor sergeant Narelle Lowe told the court Shields couldn’t recall what happened during the crash on January 22.

Blood samples taken at the hospital showed multiple drugs in Shields’ system.

Shields represented himself in court, aided by a walking stick.

“I thought I had enough time before the last smoke and the time I rode,” he said.

“It was my own stupidity not knowing how much time before having the drugs and being able to ride.”

Magistrate Graham Lee noted two previous drug driving convictions, one from 2020 in the Gatton court and the other at Caboolture in 2018.

“The certificate of analysis detected various drugs in your system, including meth and (marijuana),” Mr Lee said.

“You’ve been given a bit of probation before for similar offending. The moral of the story is you shouldn’t be taking it at all.”

“You’ve still taken the drugs and miscalculated getting it out of your system – you shouldn’t be taking it full stop.”

Shields pleaded guilty to one charge of drug driving.

He was placed on probation for 12 months and disqualified from driving for seven months.
