Hundreds of punters travelled from across southeast Queensland for an epic day of country racing at Esk at the weekend.

Spectators braved the 35C heat, taking refuge under the expansive canopy of the camphor laurel trees surrounding the track, while indulging in a cold one or two.

Gates opened at 10.30am at the Esk Racecourse on Saturday, March 18, and the five races wrapped up before 4pm.

The day proved to be an exciting and historic day for a Wondai horse trained by Kristen Roon, Jai, who won the first race of her career.

The three-year-old Filly and her jockey Kelly Gates took out the first race defeating Wet Fat Cat in the $10,000 Maiden Plate’s two-year-old and up race.

The Esk Jockey Club hosts three race meets a year, with the upcoming event on Saturday July, 8, bringing in the largest crowd.
