Man airlifted after five-vehicle crash on Warrego Highway

A man has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a five-vehicle crash on the Warrego Highway at Hatton Vale this afternoon.

A man has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a five-vehicle crash on the Warrego Highway at Hatton Vale this afternoon.

The man, aged in his 50s, sustained serious injuries including severe leg injuries and hip fractures and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital by an Emergency Management Queensland helicopter.

Gatton police Sergeant Tony Harm said the crash occurred around 1.30pm.

"It appears a truck has collided into a couple of vehicles in front of it," he said.

"These vehicles were slowed in traffic trying to merge due to some road works which were going on at the time."

Queensland Fire and Rescue Ipswich Command Acting Inspector Peter Yarrow said on arrival they found the man trapped in a vehicle which was carrying a number of different types of gas cylinders.

"Some were acetylene cylinders which can prove extremely dangerous, in a serious condition they can degrade and cause a danger," he said.

Another person was taken to Lowood District Health Service with shoulder pain and another six were checked at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit and Scene of Crime officers are still on the scene conducting investigations.

Road diversions are in place.
