Why a rare look at life on land plays crucial role in inspiring future farmers

“We depend on shows like this because our economy depends a lot on farming … if you don’t have food, you can’t live.”

The Fraser Coast Ag Show presents a rare opportunity for people from urban to get a taste of rural life.

Tiaro resident Brian Carter runs Kelbriton Lane Dexter Stud and is also a stud cattle steward at this year’s show.

For him, it’s not about rides and dagwood dogs but the chance to take a look at life on the land – not only livestock but also machinery and the processes involved in growing food.

He said it was important for children to come along and see the different animals up close.

“It opens up a lot of people’s eyes, when you live in the city where you’re surrounded by cars where as here you’re surrounded by animals,” Mr Carter said.

Mr Carter was pleased to see students, including those from Hervey Bay State High School and Riverside State High School display their agricultural programs at the show.

“We’ve got to have youth … it’s amazing to see the youngsters here, while not all go all the way through with agriculture, there are a lot that do go on to have their own properties,” he said.

“It all stems from what we have here at the show, it’s great … it’s great having the show because it brings people together.

“We depend on shows like this because our economy depends a lot on farming … if you don’t have food, you can’t live.

“It makes people realise what we have to have for our future,” Mr Carter said.
