Six cannabis plants were discovered in the pool area of a tradesman’s home when police went there on another matter.
Ryan John Domelow, 45, pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday to unlawfully producing drugs.
The court heard on January 31, 2025, police went to Domelow’s home at Urangan for another matter and were alerted to a crop of six mature cannabis plants in the pool area.
Domelow admitted to knowing the cannabis plants were there but denied being the owner of the plants.
He had no criminal history, the court heard.
There was no allegation of commerciality in relation to the plants.
The court heard Domelow worked as a concreter but was also a qualified carpenter.
He had been self-medicating for back pain and had applied for a cannabis prescription but hadn’t received it yet.
He had three dependent children.
Magistrate Trinity McGarvie said she took into account that Domelow had no criminal history but she told him he needed to understand how serious the offending was.
“If you continue to involve yourself with illicit drugs, terms of imprisonment are commonly imposed,” she said.
Ms McGarvie said she took into account that he had now seen a doctor for proper help.
Domelow was fined $950 and no conviction was recorded.
