The father of the youngest of Maryborough’s triple crash victims, who died when a 13-year-old behind the wheel of a stolen car caused a three-car crash on Saltwater Creek Road, has spoken out for the first time.

Owen Davies, father of 17-year-old Kelsie, stood with LNP leader David Crisafulli who was visiting Maryborough this week.

The boy, now 14, will be sentenced for dangerous driving causing death in November in Hervey Bay after he entered a guilty plea last month.

The crash, which happened on April 30, 2023, also claimed the lives of Michale Chandler, 29, and nurse Sheree Robertson, 52.

Survivor Kaylah Behrens, 24, was left in a coma after the crash and is still continuing her recovery.

Mr Crisafulli said during his visit he had spoken to Mr Davies about his loss and what it “meant to him as a father”.

He said there was a better way of dealing with Queensland’s youth crime crisis, including stronger laws, rehabilitation to stop young people from reoffending and early intervention.

Mr Crisafulli said he was confident that if elected his government would address all three of those issues around youth crime.

Kelsie had just graduated from Riverside Christian College and had seen a movie with her friends, Michale and Kaylah, on the night of the crash.

The learner driver was behind the wheel of the vehicle to get her night hours up so she could get her licence, her mother Susan Marcus shared at the time.

All three were members of Maryborough’s Reach Church and Kelsie was employed at Parkside on Adelaide and had dreams of being a dancer.

Kelsie was the youngest of eight children.

Ms Davies said the loss of Kelsie had been “very, very hard”.

“It’s been 15 months but it’s just like yesterday,” he said.

“Very hard to handle.”

His daughter had her whole life in front of her and it had been taken away, Mr Davies said.

He said the current laws weren’t “doing any good whatsoever”.

LNP candidate for Maryborough John Barounis said he didn’t want to see anyone else in the community going through what Mr Davies was going through.
