A “peace vigil” is being held by members of the Fraser Coast’s Christian community outside Maryborough’s Rheinmetall NIOA munitions factory, where they claim shells are being produced and supplied to Israel in the war in Gaza.
The vigil began on Sunday and is set to conclude on Wednesday after the group decided to hold the event in the lead up to Christmas.
In a statement, the group said 155mm Howitzer shells, “made right here in Maryborough”, were the most in-demand munitions used in the “genocide” in Gaza.
‘They are being used to refill German stockpiles of munitions, which are then supplied to Israel,” organiser Margaret Pestorius said.
“We are praying for an end to the genocide in Palestine.
“We know many Christians are seeking peace this Advent season.
“The fastest way to peace is to stop the flow of weapons, including munitions: an arms embargo.
“We hope Maryborough Christians will come and vigil with us.
“These Maryborough-produced bombs enable Germany to maintain their own stockpiles while increasing their exports to Israel.”
Multiple people have gathered outside the factory, holding banners and signs.
In a brief statement, a Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions spokesman said there were no disruptions to their operations.
