More than a year after the project was first floated, painting has started to transform the public toilets on the Maryborough town hall green into the Divine Dunnies.

Artist Akos Juhasz, an established Fraser Coast artist with classic training in Europe, said he was happy to be starting work on the commission, painting the men’s area first.

“This is a really important and exciting job for me. Every painting is exciting but this one combines several styles into a postmodern work that incorporates historical art as well.”

The men’s precinct will be closed while complex murals and sympathetic linking designs take shape under Mr Juhasz’s brush.

The parenting room and women’s area will be closed for the second half of the project.

Also happy to see the first mural taking shape on the hallway hall was Fraser Coast Regional Council senior property officer Sean Jenkinson.

“It’s an exciting project and like everyone else I am looking forward to seeing the end result.”

The Divine Dunnies team, a committee working under the Maryborough City Progress Association Inc., began fundraising last year for the toilets revamp, estimated to cost between $80,000 and $100,000.

Committee secretary Nan Ott said a generous response from the community and donations from councillor discretionary funds put the committee in a position to reach its target.

Art work in the precinct will have a Victoriana theme, with feminine and garden accents in the women’s area, Mary Poppins images in the parenting room and a steam engine aspect veering into Steampunk in the men’s area.

“The Victorian era saw an obsession with exploring and futuristic predictions, so expect a touch of Jules Verne in the final project,” Mrs Ott said.
