The weather bureau warns conditions are expected to remain dangerous through Saturday.
BOM Meteorologist Kimba Wong said the surf conditions had been made worse by the “current supermoon Spring tide.”
“The hazardous surf warning is current for a significant south-easterly swell redeveloping along southern Queensland coast later (Thursday, May 27),” Meteorologist Ms Wong said.
“This swell is expected to have a height of about two to three metres and period of about 14 to 16 seconds for quite a long period … generated by a strong wind near New Zealand, between a low pressure system and a high pressure system earlier in the week.”
Over the weekend, it’s expected a “significant” southerly swell will being to develop along the state.
“(The) significant southerly swell will begin to develop along the southern Queensland coast from another low pressure system developing new New Zealand in the eastern Tasman Sea,” Ms Wong said.
“Swell conditions are likely to gradually ease through the early days of next week, dissipating by Wednesday along the southern Queensland coast.”
