Investigations are underway after a man was allegedly caught trying to carry a dead whale bone off K’gari in 2023.
A Department of Environment spokesman said Tuesday officers were looking into the alleged 2023 incident after “recently” being made aware of his attempts to take the prohibited item off the island.
It is understood the man had tied the whale bone to the roof of a vehicle.
The bone was noticed as the vehicle was on the barge, and is understood the bone was surrendered to rangers at Inskip Point.
Revelations of the investigation follow news a humpback whale calf was euthanised after stranding on the eastern side of the island, near Eurong.
The newborn calf was reported to the Department Monday night, the spokesman said.
It is it the fifth humpback to strand on the island in this year’s migration period.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife rangers examined the stranded calf early Tuesday morning and, following veterinary advice and the discovery of shark cuts near its abdomen it was humanely euthanised before being moved off the beach and up the dunes where it will be left for nature to take its course.
Residents and visitors to the island are reminded that whale carcasses become part of K’gari’s natural resources and must not be disturbed, the spokesman said.
It is unlawful to touch, move or take whale bones from K’gari, or any Queensland beach or location, or to be in possession of whale bones without a permit.
