K'gari rangers to get new homes after modular barracks arrive at Eurong
Four-bedroom barracks built in Brisbane factories have been trucked across sand dunes to give K'gari rangers a new home away from home.
Rangers will soon have a home away from home on K’gari, with the delivery of modular homes to Eurong underway.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor said modular homes had been delivered to the ranger station on K’gari for the first time in “many, many years”.
“This is the biggest investment in supporting our rangers on the island in a long time, and modular is a great way of achieving this.
“It’s faster, it had less impacts on the environment and it’s another example of how QBuild is delivering in every corner of Queensland.”
Mr O’Connor said the new housing would be important support for the rangers, who were often on the island for a couple of weeks at a time.
“It will really help make sure they have a beautiful home away from home while they are working on the island,” he said.
The modular homes were built in the factory in Brisbane by QBuild tradies and apprentices, Mr O’Connor said.
He said it was terrific to see the homes being brought across to the island on the barge from Inskip Point and being trucked to the site.
A spokesman from QBuild said a lot of planning had gone into transporting the homes, with trucks becoming stuck twice in the sand on the way from Hook Point to Eurong.
But with the equipment they had brought, they were quickly able to get moving again, he said.
The four-bed barracks were transported by truck and ferry to K’gari and then transported up the beach to Eurong.
The modular system cuts construction time dramatically, avoiding mainland delays and minimising environmental disturbance on the island, a statement from the State Government said.
The homes are currently being installed, with rangers expected to be able to use them by Christmas.
