Feline lovers will no longer need to travel hours to show off their furry babies’ beauty, as the Fraser Coast cat show is returning this year.

The Regional Queensland Cat Club (RQCC) has announced, for the first time in more than seven years, furry friends will be able to take to the catwalk in their own town as the Fraser Coast welcomes back the cat show.

The event will be held on October 30 at the Woocoo Community Centre at Oakhurst, where pedigree and non-pedigree felines are welcome and less-common breeds like Siberians, Sphynxs and La Perms are also expected to show up.

RQCC President Mary West said the “usual crowd favourites” remain the Ragdoll, Persian and Maine Coon breeds.

RQCC President Mary West said she wanted the event to go beyond showing “people some beautiful cats”, as she wants to integrate focus of responsible pet care.

“A lot of people see cats only as a nuisance who kill native animals, yet, for a lot of us the opposite is true,” Mary told the Chronicle.

“I think if we educate the public, especially our children, we will help to reduce the feral cat population and over-breeding we are seeing.”

All feline entrants must be:

  • up-to-date with vaccinations
  • flea and worm treated
  • groomed, with nails clipped
  • desexed

Maryborough local Janet McArthur will be entering her pedigree Munchkin cats in the show.

“I’m glad that we can have a show up here instead of having to travel to Brisbane,” Janet said.

The RQCC is currently seeking local sponsors for the show, with entries opening from mid September.
