Foggy mornings to fade away as cold continues

Forecasters have said we’ve seen “ the last of the fog” for the week, but we’re yet to see the last of single-digit morning temperatures.

The foggy mornings are said to be gone for now, but Fraser Coast locals can still expect storms and cold morning temperatures for the rest of the week.

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) meteorologist Shane Kenney told the Chronicle Wednesday’s fog combined with “the fair amount of moisture” hanging about from storms and showers the day before.

“Then, because (the rain) cleared off in the afternoon and overnight, those clear skies let it develop fog in the morning … with that we had some quite light winds as well for a fairly substantial area across the majority of these coasts and that really hung around Hervey Bay and Fraser Island for quite a while this morning … that stopped the sun heading up and evaporating that clouds,” he said.

The Fraser Coast can expect “patchy” showers and storms overnight and into tomorrow morning, especially in Hervey Bay, as the rain then moves offshore for the majority of tomorrow.

“The showers and chance of a thunderstorm has being called by a trough cold front moving through the area,” Mr Kenney said.

“As (the rain) continues offshore through the morning and afternoon tomorrow, that should preclude the chance of fog tomorrow morning … the air won't be able to cool down enough to get that fog to form again.

“By late afternoon we’re expecting it to be all offshore, so that should calm right down, and then we‘ll get another burst of cooler dry air in the wake of that change.”

Hervey Bay is expected to receive about 5mm of rainfall tomorrow, as further north including Bundaberg could see 10 to 20mm fall throughout the day.

By Friday morning, June 18, the weather will return to “cool and dry conditions” across the Fraser Coast, with overnight minimums to reach below 10C.

“The overnight temperatures will sit around seven or eight in Maryborough over the weekend – it’s likely to be clear but cool weekend coming up,” Mr Kenney said.

There are no wind warnings expected to be issued for the weekend, however, waters may be “a little bit choppy”, sitting at the 15 to 20 knot range.
