UPDATE, 6pm:
Dozens have shared their experience after shaking was felt in homes and businesses throughout the Fraser Coast on Thursday.
An earthquake was ruled out by Geoscience Australia, leading some to speculate the shaking could have been caused by training at the army base at Tin Can Bay.
However, a spokeswoman at the base said while training was being carried out, none of the activities on Thursday would explain the shocks.
A sonic boom was also ruled out as a possible cause.
The spokeswoman said on occasion, blasting carried out during roadworks was mistaken for earthquakes.
Meanwhile, on the Fraser Coast Chronicle’s Facebook page, Estelle Schabort said she felt the shaking at Point Vernon.
“I thought it was an explosion as the windows rattled and our pet dog Patch reacted too,” she wrote.
Macey Taylor said she felt it in Tinana and would love to know what it was.
Kylie Wardrop felt the shaking twice at Kawungan.
Melissa Lloyd said she felt it in Craignish at 11.30am and then a series of ‘aftershocks’.
She said it made the windows rattle and her birds “go crazy”.
A Hervey Bay resident, who asked not to be named also emailed the Chronicle, saying while he didn’t experience any shaking he did hear rumbling like thunder several times throughout the day despite there being no storm activity on the radar.
EARLIER: Earthquake experts have carried out an investigation after multiple reports of ‘shaking’ were flagged by people living in the Hervey Bay region on Thursday.
Geoscience Australia confirmed that while “no seismic events” were observed in the region, the agency had received multiple reports of shaking in the area.
“Our seismologists have investigated … and can confirm that there was no earthquake in the Hervey Bay region today,” a spokeswoman said.
The cause of the shaking remains unknown but was widely reported on social media across the Fraser Coast.
Fraser Coast Councillor Paul Truscott said he had received reports of the shaking from a number of residents, while others took to Facebook community pages to share what they had felt.
Fraser Coast Chronicle editor Jessica Grewal, who was near the Kawungan school at the time, said the windows in the house she was in rattled like they would in a bad storm.
Volcanodiscovery.com also received reports of the shaking about 11.35am.
Others reported feeling “aftershocks” between that time and about 2pm.
