The scope of works will include dredging in the entrance channel and the internal harbour channels.

The maintenance dredging campaign will aim to remove about 28,000 cubic metres of material from the entrance channel through to the channels within with harbour.

The dredge is a cutter suction dredge that will transport the dredged material via a pipeline to the disposal ponds on the seaward side of the harbour rock wall.

A contract worth about $627,000 was recently awarded to experienced dredging contractor, Dredging Solutions Pty Ltd to undertake the works.

Maritime and Safety Queensland general manager Kell Dillon said Hervey Bay was a popular destination for boaties and visitors coming to the area to launch their vessels or book a whale watching tour.

“This work will vastly improve access for harbour users,” he said.

“The contractor, Dredging Solutions, will start onsite in early June at the harbour entrance and then work their way through the inner harbour across a two-month period.

“As with all of our dredging campaigns, sediment sampling has been undertaken and water quality monitoring will continue throughout the dredging campaign to ensure as little environmental disturbance as possible.

“We thank boaties in advance for their patience during the works and ask them to take care and navigate around the dredge with caution.”

It comes a week after it was announced work would soon begin on formulating a Urangan Harbour master plan, which will bring long term vision to the home of Hervey Bay’s whale watching fleet.
