Dozens seeking help from Salvation Army in Hervey Bay

Families are reaching out for help across the Fraser Coast as the rising cost-of-living hits hip pockets, but this group is determined to leave “no one in need” this Christmas.

The Salvation Army in Hervey Bay has launched its Christmas Appeal for 2022, revealing almost 50 families and individuals have come forward seeking assistance in the past few weeks.

Dozens of Hervey Bay families have come forward ahead of Christmas seeking help from the Salvation Army, but there’s still time to get assistance.

After the launch of its Christmas Appeal for 2022, Captain Aaron Reid said he had expected the figure to climb in the lead-up to Christmas, which was always the busiest time of the year for The Salvos.

He said already almost 50 families and individuals had been helped by the organisation.

“We have a steady stream of people coming through the door,” Mr Reid said.

“This year, we’re seeing a lot more seniors.

“We’re putting that down to a combination of factors, but clearly rising cost-of-living expenses is playing a big part.

“Everything seems to be costing more – fuel, food and electricity, and this is no doubt having an impact.”

The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $3.1m in Queensland during this year’s Christmas Appeal.

“If you can afford to lend a hand or make a donation, you’ll be making a huge difference to those who are really struggling,” Mr Reid said.

Hervey Bay Salvos will be hosting a number of local events this year, including a carols afternoon event on December 11.

“Leaving no one in need also means leaving no one lonely this Christmas,” he said.

“We would love to see you at any of our events, church services or community programs during the festive season,” Captain Reid said.

“For financial and emergency assistance, please reach out to our national financial support service on 07 3001 6288 (9am-5pm Monday to Friday).”
