Another frightening human v dingo encounter on K’gari has been posted to social media, warning school holiday visitors to be vigilant no matter how many times they have visited and how well they think they know the dingos there.
The incident was posted on the Caught on Fishing Facebook page on Friday, September 22, 2023, and is the latest in a series of negative interactions in 2024.
“We just had our first bad dingo experience after our 22nd time on the island, please be vigilant,” the post read.
“This dingo decided to charge at us while digging up pipis on the beach, after multiple lunges at us and stalking us for a few minutes we were lucky enough that two 4wd utes came racing down and started beeping and put themselves between us and the dingo.
“We thought this was a one-off random event but we were wrong, after the dingo left us alone it started charging at random beachgoers, acting like a game of cat and mouse with people walking and fishing on the beach.
“It continued to charge and harass multiple groups of people as we watched from a distance to make sure anyone else who came into contact with the dingo was safe and we would be there in our 4wd if needed be, it eventually went over the dunes and ran off.
“We love the island, but please be vigilant and stay safe. This was a big wake-up call for ourselves who became too complacent.
“The dingo has a blue tag in his ear and is around the Cathedral area. We aren’t looking for an argument as I know this post will have multiple opinions, it’s just a warning to people coming to the island.”
It comes as rangers increased patrols on K’gari after a third dingo was destroyed on the island this year.
Earlier in September, a dingo who was involved in six high risk attacks was destroyed.
The dingo’s latest attack was on August 26 when it bit a woman who was standing alone. Since May, the dingo almost attacked a four-year-old boy, grabbed the tracksuit of a woman, jumped at the chest of a girl and attempted to bite another person.
A second dingo on the island is also being “closely monitored”.
The Department of Environment and Science has been contacted for comment.
