The sod had been turned on a planned $4m social housing estate in Maryborough.

Golden shovels at the ready, representatives from Community Lifestyle Agency, the company behind the development and National Disability Insurance Scheme recipients turned over the first soil at the Lennox St site.

The project will create up to 40 jobs and once built house eight Fraser Coast residents living with a disability.

Community Lifestyles Agency spokeswoman Jess Lane said what set this development apart was its proximity to services and the CBD.

“It is close to the pool, shops and health services which means National Disability Insurance Scheme participants will be able to use the transport funding in another way,” Ms Lane said.

Living Housing Solutions’ Damien Matheson said he and his colleagues felt privileged to help provide housing for people with disabilities.

“With our experience in the building industry, it was the perfect opportunity to provide the community with housing that will assist the people who live in them and give them a sense of belonging,” he said.

Fraser Coast Regional Council councillor Daniel Sanderson congratulated those involved.

“It’s excellent to see confidence growing in Maryborough with Community Lifestyles Agency announcing today and turning the sod on a brand new $4 million housing facility to be built close to Maryborough’s City Centre,” he said.

“A great day for Maryborough and the wider Fraser Coast.”

Currently, there are 3,757 active participants accessing an average NDIS payment of $30,000 each.

Construction will begin shortly and it is expected to be completed around July 2024.
