While the Fraser Coast prepares for a massive auction in the wake of the Australian Scout Jamboree, the money it brought to local business and exposure it will continue to bring to the region can be revealed.

The huge economic benefits the Australian Scout Jamboree has brought to the Fraser Coast can now be revealed.

As 10,000 Scouts and volunteers packed up and left after the big event this week, organisers gave a conservative estimate that $9-10 million had been injected into the local economy during their stay, which briefly grew Maryborough’s population by about 30 per cent.

“And that is just the direct spending,” Camp Chief Geoff Doo said.

“The indirect spending will continue to flow as Fraser Coast businesses continue to benefit from this initial spending.

“Just one example that I am aware of is the start-up business Wide Bay Sweets, which opened just three weeks ago, generated one month’s anticipated revenue in five days of Jamboree with thousands of Scouts through their doors,” Mr Doo said.

“Owner Matthew told us that he plans to use the unexpected revenue to bring forward plans to enhance his online and shop front presence.

“This is just one of many stories I am hearing from local businesses,” he said.

Not Another Coffee Shop owners in Maryborough, Bec and Andrew, said that they were turning over weekly numbers every day at a time when their business was usually slow.

Although they knew of the Jamboree, they were not expecting the foot traffic.

With so many local coffee shops competing for business, they were pleasantly surprised when Scouts and leaders started turning up.

“It has been a magical 10 days, the Scouts have been sprinkling badges and spending cash like fairy dust around the shop,” Andrew said.

“I started by filling my hat with badges the Scouts were giving us, and now we have filled an entire wall,” he said.

Business partner Bec said: “Put aside the financials, these guys have blessed our town in ways that we cannot express.”

Fraser Coast Tourism and Events general manager Martin Simons said the event would provide welcome exposure for the region.

The benefits of the visit are also set to extend to locals across the Fraser Coast.

Winter Auctions will host a clearance sale of thousands of items left over from the Jamboree, including sporting equipment generators, appliances, compressors, industrial fans and tools, office furniture and stationery, marquees and much more.

The event will be held at the Maryborough Showgrounds from 11am this Sunday.

Among the items will be barbecues, air conditioners, chairs, cupboards, desks, cooler boxes, industrial fans, fridges, gazebos, gas bottles and much more.
