The upgrades to the facility on Boundary Road in Wondunna mean the 25m pool area will need to be closed for the next six months

“The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre opened in 1988 and the upgrades are designed to cater for our community needs and aspirations over the next 40 to 50 years,” Fraser Coast Regional Council executive manager Joyce Chorny said.

Much of the work will take place beyond the public’s view, with a refurbishment of the existing plant room and a new backwash tank and chlorine spill tank in the service yard prioritised.

Other first-stage upgrades will include new change rooms and enclosures for the pool.

“The upgrades are about improving the aquatic centre’s safety and reliability and ensuring it meets modern standards,” Mrs Chorny said.

The state government will invest $3.5 million towards the $4.1 million project through its Local Government Grants and Subsidies program.

The 50m pool and heated program pool will remain open during the first stage of the upgrade, with the works timed to occur in the cooler months to minimise the disruption to swimmers.

The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre upgrades will secure the long term future of the facility.

The timeline for the rest of the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre Masterplan is uncertain with Mrs Chorny saying it would depend on available funding and what grants are available from other levels of government.

A new splash pad, water-play areas, lagoon pool water slides and upgrades to the viewing decks and change rooms have also been promised, along with upgrades to the 25m pool and 50m pool.
