AFTER 80 years, Boltons Furniture, one of Maryborough's oldest businesses, has closed.

An application for a wind-up order to dissolve the company was made in the Queensland Supreme Court.

Pieces of yellow paper with the words "closed" hung in the windows of the Ellena St business on Monday, marking the end of an era.

According to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission website, an application for the winding up of Decor R Us Pty Ltd, the parent company behind Boltons, was commenced by plaintiffs Bertram John and Joan Evelyn Behrendorff.

The application was heard in the Queensland Supreme Court on February 23 and it is believed the business, which has operated in Maryborough since 1935, is now in receivership.

According to documents processed during the court hearing, the application to wind up the business was first submitted on January 16.

During the court hearing on February 23, an outline of submissions and consent of liquidator form was submitted by the plaintiffs.

According to the Corporations Act, in order for a company to be wound-up, a plaintiff must file the consent form of an official liquidator, who would be entitled to be appointed as liquidator of the company.

Maryborough Chamber of Commerce president Craig Winter said he had been aware Boltons was closing, adding that a company shutting down after so long was like "losing a member of your family".

He said he first heard of the furniture business's troubles about six weeks ago.

Mr Winter said he had tried to get in contact with the owners of the business, though he said not much could be done now.

"We want to get an exit statement so we can help to prevent other businesses going to the same way," he said.

Attempts to contact the Behrendorffs were unsuccessful.
