The owner of a Torbanlea nursery has unveiled details of a planned $1.5 million development which will see a cafe and shopfront built on the banks of the Burrum River.

Bamboo Land Nursery and Parklands, owned by the Nilsson family since its opening in 1993, is undergoing an expansion set for completion by 2025.

Since family patriarch Klas planted the first bamboo seedling more than 30 years ago, the family has dedicated themselves to the business.

“It is very much a family business, it always has been,” owner Janne Nilsson said.

“My wife, Tarrisa, and I have children and it is quite possible they could be next line to take charge.”

When asked why they invested heavily in bamboo, Mr Nilsson said that in the 1990s it was a new and interesting plant.

“These days a commercial element to its production is emerging, it is a big industry that is set to take off in Australia,” he said.

“Along with our private customers, we are all supplying plantations with seeds to make this happen.”

Mr Nilsson said the humid conditions on the Fraser Coast were “adequate” for bamboo growth.

‘The more humidity, the more rainfall, the better they will grow,” he said.

Mr Nilsson has operated the 12ha property since 2006, and said the development would allow the business to hold “many more functions” like weddings.

He said the building’s design would “invite” natural light and resemble a greenhouse.

“We hope that all who use the venue, will have a coffee, have a bit of lunch and buy a plant,” Mr Nilsson said.

He said even when the development was completed the surrounding parklands would “always remain free for people to walk around”.

The neighbouring nursery is also undergoing redevelopment with two new greenhouses to be installed in the area in the coming months.

The company’s nursery exports nationally with Melbourne and Sydney their biggest markets.

“Last year we did around $3 million in sales,” Mr Nilsson said.

“This area as a whole is starting to get full, we make sure to use every square metre we have.”
