QLD's 2022 road toll described as "concerning"

A car has crashed into a Fortitude Valley store as the driver attempted to evade police.

A QPS spokeswoman said police were called to the scene of the crash just before 1.30pm on Friday after the driver allegedly hit several vehicles, before ploughing into the K2 Base Camp outdoor store on Wickham St.

“Police attempted to approach the vehicle on foot as they believed the vehicle to have stolen plates,” she said.

“The vehicle then reversed into multiple other vehicles before speeding away, then drove into a bus and up onto a footpath and then into a shopfront multiple times.

“It struck a number of vehicles in the process, the car then continued to Spring Hill where the driver abandoned it.”

Floor manager at the K2 Base Camp store, Rudi Perandis-Wyatt told the Courier-Mail he was shocked to see his storefront destroyed after hearing a the crash.

“It was loud, I was in the lunchroom and it sounded like shelves were falling over,” he said.

“So I ran out and saw the car driving into the wall, and reversing in and out trying to get away.

“It smashed more than half of the glass wall and there’s also a tyre burn mark on the floor.

“One of the girls went home early because she was a bit shook up, she was at the counter which was only about eight meters away from it all.”

The driver was taken into custody a short distance away, before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police added that no one was injured during the pursuit.
