An Aussie man has gone on a global trek – taking 576 days to run a staggering 26,232km.

576-day run around the world ends in Brisbane

Former Brisbane lawyer Tim Franklin has crossed the finish line in the River City after a 576-day, 26,232km run around the world.

Only seven other people have circumnavigated the globe, Mr Franklin taking on the mission to share the “message of movement”.

A sea of spectators were on hand at South Bank to see him bust through the tape to end a journey that was the equivalent of more than 620 marathons, averaging one marathon-length run every day for 19 months.

The feat conjured memories of Forrest Gump’s marathon effort in the self-titled movie from 1994.

The final leg of Mr Franklin’s run started at New Farm Park on June 30 and many of his supporters ran alongside him as he travelled the final 10km to South Bank.

He finished the stunning feat with many smiles, hugs and selfies, but feeling energised and ready for a new challenge.

“The body feels really good, I might go for a run tomorrow,” he said.

“I’m just a local Brisbane boy, I don’t expect anything like this. I was expecting 5 to 10 of my closest mates and family here.

“To have … complete strangers who feel like they know me is a testament to the job that my crew has done.”

The journey involved battling through harsh weather, dog attacks, close calls with traffic and careful steps over a 150m tall bridge without guardrails.

But the toughest moment was learning of his dad’s death.

“Today I feel really sad that his father is not here to see him finish the run,” said mother Roslyn Franklin.

Mr Franklin said he was proud of the impact his run has had and the community of supporters he has inspired, including past world record holder Tom Denniss who was at South Bank on Sunday.

“The world record was a carrot dangling but it was never the be all and end all,” Mr Franklin said of a feat he ultimately missed out on.

“I’ve got people out, I’ve got people moving.”

Mr Franklin set out on this challenge in December 2022 with hopes of inspiring others to lead healthier lives. Having once weighed 120kg, he hoped his journey across 19 countries and 5 continents would get others moving.

He also raised nearly $40,000 for charities along the way.

“It’s not about how fast you go, it’s about the journey you go on.”

“If you’re smiling, you’re going faster.”
