Queenslanders would save hundreds of dollars while going on the most popular summer holiday road trips if they switched to electric vehicles, new data has revealed.

Those heading on the open road this summer can expect to be stung at the bowser with fuel prices surging, including by almost 50c at some service stations in Brisbane this week.

Analysis by the Climate Council has revealed the most popular holiday road trip routes, like Brisbane to Cairns or Brisbane to Sydney, would cost $293 and $156 less if drivers switched to electric vehicles.

Getting from Brisbane to Noosa would cost $32 in fuel in an average passenger car, according to the research, but for an electric vehicle charged on the grid it would be just $6 in power costs.

Economist and Climate Councillor Nicki Hutley said fuel consumption was a major consideration when choosing a care, with seven in 10 drivers in a recent survey by the organisation saying they’re changing their driving habits like avoiding road trips in response to skyrocketing fuel prices.

“Having cleaner cars that are cheaper to run will help relieve the cost of living pressure on Brisbane households,” she said.

Retired veterinarian Judy Seton, of Rochedale South, said switching to an electric vehicle had been a “revolution” citing the car’s speed, efficiency and the savings that come with ditching fuel engines.

The Climate Council is pushing for the federal government to follow through on a promise to put in place fuel efficiency standards — a move which caps emissions across a manufacturer’s overall sales to incentivise carmakers to supply low and zero-emission vehicles.
