An Ipswich mother has revealed the horror she faced overnight when smoke alarms alerted that her dishwasher had caught on fire during a late night wash cycle.

Angie Ranae, an NDIS support payment recipient, said she stacked the dishes into her new Westinghouse dishwasher, provided by her real estate, as she usually would.

She now faces the possibility she might have to leave the unit, should it be deemed unlivable.

“I turned it on and went upstairs to sleep,” Ms Ranae said.

“I had been in bed for about thirty minutes before my smoke alarms went off and I rushed downstairs to see thick black smoke.

“When I opened the dishwasher door it burst into flames.”

Ms Ranae said her unit was covered in soot and dirt.

The 45-year-old called Queensland Fire Department who arrived with two crews to the east Ipswich property at 7.20pm.

A QFD spokesman said the fire was put out within five minutes of crews arriving at the scene.

“One person was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and we stayed at the home for 70 minutes to conduct atmospheric testing,” a QFES spokesman said.

“The extent of the damage was to the dishwasher,” he said.

Ms Ranae said she wanted to spread awareness to other residents to prevent the same thing happening to them.

“I snapped a photo to show the real estate as this is the second time my dishwasher has caught fire living in this complex, the other incident was in another unit three years ago,” Ms Ranae said.

“The entire apartment is covered in soot and dirt from the flames.

“My real estate agent have told me I may be presented with a notice to leave as the unit is unlivable, I will have nowhere to go.”

An Ipswich resident said this was a “new fear unlocked”.

“I’ve heard of clothes dryers catching on fire but never a dishwasher, how scary,” he said.

Another resident said from now on she would not be going to sleep while her dishes washed.
