Police have dramatically arrested an alleged surfboard thief in the ocean on the Gold Coast.
Comedic local surf reporter Nick Atkins posted footage of the incident at Burleigh Heads.
“A dramatic arrest has taken place on the Gold Coast just minutes ago at Burleigh Heads with police chasing the villain out of the surf,” Atkins posted to Facebook on Friday.
“The man has allegedly pinched someone’s surfboard from the beach and pinned his ears back trying to get to the fair shores of NZ.”
Police confirmed they had taken a 49-year-old man into custody.
“Initial information indicates that at around 11.55am police received a report that a man had allegedly stolen a surfboard from outside a Goodwin Terrace business,” a spokesman said.
“It was then alleged he entered the water with the surfboard and refused to leave.
“Police continued to engage with the man, and he was taken into custody at around 1.50pm.
“Investigations are continuing.”
