Police in western Queensland have come to the aid of a puggle after receiving reports from a concerned witness that the baby echidna was being taken care of by an unauthorized carer.

Between November 28 and 29, Dalby police along with the Queensland Wildlife and Parks Service, worked together to rescue the puggle from an Irvingdale address, where the authorized person was attempting to take care of the animal.

The puggle has since been turned over to a wildlife rehabilitation facility to continue to grow safely.

Police report that it’s illegal to take a class 1 protected animal from the wild and in doing so, could result in 3000 penalty units or two years’ jail, under the Nature Conservations Act 1992.

It’s also reported that under the act it’s an offence to keep or use a protected animal and can resort in the same penalties.

QWPS will continue its investigations into the matter.

Residents who find an animal in need of assistance should call RSPCA on 1300 264 625 (1300 animal) or visit the Department of Environment and Science Wildlife website.

Those with information regarding criminal offences should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
