More than a dozen homes could go to auction over unpaid rates, as residents across the Western Downs region feel the pinch of rising cost of living pressures.
Western Downs Regional Council delivered the 2023/24 budget two weeks ago, which included a 3.8 per cent rates rise, have shared 18 properties that will go under the hammer due to unpaid or overdue rates.
A total of $840,426.27 is owed to council across the 18 properties, with one site in Miles, a 5.2197ha industrial property, owing $521,952.52 that has been due since September 2017.
Last week during the budget announcement, Mayor Paul McVeigh said the rates increase was low when compared with the current financial climate.
The auction for the properties will be held on November 3, 2023 and those interested can conduct a kerbside inspection only as they won’t be allowed to enter the house.

Among the properties listed is residential address 21 Vowles St in Miles which boasts five bedrooms, three bathrooms and can fit up to five vehicles, owing $12,054.18 in unpaid rate.
It’s located in Green Akers Estate which sits just behind Miles Historical Village Museum and the local racecourse has an estimated value of $379,000.
On the other side of the coin sits 6 Hallinan Court in Dalby which is a 702sq m block of land waiting to be built upon with an estimated value of $276,000, which has $10,486.34 owed in unpaid rates.
The spot is located between Dalby Bunnings and the Golf Course.
