IT WAS a three-peat of delight for the Bassingthwaighte family, who were the big winners out of the opening round of the Paddock to Plate competition.
The beef competition run by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland had its opening round at the Mort&Co Feedlot at Grassdale.
The Bassingthwaighte pair of Alastair and Andrew from Wallumbilla were victorious in the Class 37 and Class 38 beef competition, and claimed the highest individual weight gain for a cow in Class 38.
Andrew Bassingthwaighte said it was a great win for his team.
"It's amazing. We have always been striving to compete harder,” he said.
"We normally can't get our steers into the competition because they are too heavy, but this year we had a really dry season so we were able to have a bigger selection of steers.
"To be able to come away with the wins is huge.”
RNA Beef Cattle Committee chairman Gary Noller said the Paddock to Plate competition was an opportunity for some of the nation's top beef producers to benchmark their genetics.
"The Bassingthwaighte family have been involved in the Queensland beef industry since the 1950s, so it's great to see them take home three ribbons,” he said.
"We were very happy with the weight gains this year, considering the difficult climatic conditions experienced during the feedlot phase with the heat and dust.”
Mort&Co Feedlot's Berry Reynolds said the event allowed his team to show peers in the Australian cattle industry how their operation worked.
"It is a great opportunity for us to not only show our feedlot but show the systems we run,” he said.
"The cattle in this year's competition have been exceptionally good.”
