A woman broke down in tears while a court was told the details of a drunken crash that involved her getting behind the wheel while five times the legal limit before rolling her car multiple times, then continuing to swig out of a bottle of alcohol following the crash.

Kylie Anne Lynam appeared at Dalby Magistrates Court on May 30 after she crashed her car while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady told the court that on April 23 the 44-year-old rolled her car several times while driving on Jandowae-Connection Rd, with the car landing up against a tree and some of her belongings flung 2m up into the tree branches.

The court was told a witness who reported the crash saw the Jandowae woman take a sip out of a vodka bottle after getting out of the car.

The court was told police also located a vodka bottle at the crime scene.

Sergeant Brady said Lynam, who cried while the details of the crash were read out in court, was taken to Jandowae Hospital following the single-vehicle crash where she returned a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.259, more than five times the legal limit.

The drunk driver represented herself and submitted a letter to the court as she was “too nervous” to speak, with the letter including details about her wanting to “drink a whole heap” that evening.

Acting magistrate Andrew Walker acknowledged the woman’s history and said despite there being no recent like offences on her criminal history, she had been charged with another high-range drink driving charge 20 years ago.

“You were more than five times the limit,” Mr Walker said.

“You had the intention to drink a ‘whole heap’ somewhere but driving a motor vehicle afterwards is the concern.

“If you have a GP I strongly encourage you to have a chat to them to see if they can refer you to services.”

Lynam pleaded guilty to one count of driving while under the influence.

She was fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for 15 months.
